How Temasek Foundation Partnered with SMRT & Other Companies to Give Back to Singapore During COVID-19

Temasek Foundation International is a Singapore-based non-profit organisation that has undertaken various philanthropic initiatives, from healthcare, disaster relief, education to urban development. It engages with communities and companies in Singapore to help people in need and build the nation.

Singapore was one of the earliest countries to detect COVID-19 patients, but its early action against the coronavirus outbreak has been seen by other countries as a commendable work. The government, people, and organisations worked together to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges that came along with it.

Temasek Foundation contributed $800 million to battle COVID-19. It worked with healthcare organisations and corporate partners to enhance Singapore’s COVID-19 testing efforts. Here are the efforts taken by Temasek Foundation with the help of SMRT, Sheares Healthcare, HOPE Technik, and other corporate organisations:

1. Public transport operator SMRT provided 20 buses for retrofitting them with a Negative Pressure System and a HEPA filter for the mass transfer of COVID-19 patients in May 2020. In this initiative, Temasek Foundation, Sheares Healthcare (owner of COMET MAXI fleet), SMRT subsidiary STRIDES Transportation, and TRIGEN Automotive (special function vehicle division of HOPE Technik) worked together to get the buses retrofitted with special equipment and safety features in just 3 days. Temasek also partnered with SBS Transit and other transportation companies to retrofit 30 more vehicles for the safe transportation of the patients.

2. The foundation engaged medical partners like Parkway Pantai, The Farrer Park Company, and OneCare Medical to enhance Singapore’s COVID-19 testing efforts.

3. It worked with the Singapore Government and industry partners including Resorts World and Parkway Pantai to build and manage medical care and recovery facilities for COVID-19 patients.

4. The team at Temasek distributed hand sanitisers, masks, face shields, disinfectants, and mouthwash to clinics, medical centres, nursing homes, and social service centres. It provided reusable masks to migrant workers and domestic helpers. Temasek started #BYOBclean hand sanitiser initiative in March 2020 to distribute free hand sanitisers to all households in Singapore.

5. Temasek provided meals and food security to low-income households and individuals in need. It started “My Mental Health” to help users get the necessary support for their mental health needs during the crisis.

6. Temasek has also invested in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. Tychan, a Temasek investee company, is conducting a third trial for a potential vaccine for treating COVID-19 patients.

7. Temasek partnered with Advanced MedTech (AMTH) to design and manufacture remote-controlled ventilators.

Dr. Fidah Alsagoff, senior managing director at Temasek International, said: “At Temasek, we believe that corporates, together with the Government and the community, must all do our collective part to fight and defeat this Covid-19 pandemic.”

Mr. Seah Moon Ming, Chairman of SMRT Corporation, said: “We stand united and do our part during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are glad to support the Temasek Foundation’s ‘Stay Prepared’ initiative by leveraging our operational and technical capabilities in public transport.”
Mr. Neo Kian Hong, Group CEO at SMRT, commented, “We will remain united and focused on our mission of Moving People, Enhancing Lives.”

Conclusion
The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the lives and economies around the world. In Singapore, Temasek Foundation and its corporate partners like SMRT, SBS Transit, Parkway Pantai, and more helped to mitigate the social and economic impacts of COVID-19. Their collaborative philanthropy provided great mental, financial, and social support to those in need amid the COVID-19 outbreak in Singapore.
